The "Shakespearean" Sonnet Oxford wrote one sonnet, "Who taught thee first to sigh, alas, my heart," which is in the form of a "Shakespearean" sonnet with an echo: the first twelve lines of the sonnet are a series of questions to which the answer is "love," and the word "love" appears as an echo at the end of each of these lines and is the first word of the thirteenth line.

Miltonic sonnets deal with different themes than the other types of sonnets, though. Instead of tackling questions of romantic love or nature, Miltonic sonnets often deal with politics and moral issues thematically, and they use something called enjambment to tighten the sonnet’s structure.

Sonnets are for romantics, starry-eyed lovers and ardent hearts. And Shakespeare’s sonnets are the best ever written. But this is why they are also for cynics, for star-crossed lovers and for those who know the anguish of unrequited love. Some of them are written to a young man, some of 4/4(5).

Now that folks are all in to free verse, the metrical requirements, rhyme schemes, and stanza structures have fallen by the wayside somewhat in favor of a more loosey-goosey adherence to the form. Now we've got sonnets with no iambic pentameter, sonnets with extra lines here and there, sonnets with no volta, you name it.

Joseph Heithaus has placed human life in the middle of this spectrum, and found at the center of his fine book a dark and quiet question. Are we merely evolved, the result of a sum of instincts, or are we more carefully composed.

Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford Stratfordians tend to treat the sonnets as inadmissable evidence in the argument over the identity of "Shakespeare," but these poems allude to his high birth, age, lameness (as self-described in Oxford's letters), disgrace (he served time in the Tower of London), his being a target of "vulgar scandal" (the accusation of Oxford's "buggering boys").
